Tyler Alan Hawkins tylerhawkins@mac.com Hay River, Northwest Territories Canada I am a middle school teacher and part-time guitar instructor here in circumpolar,Hay River, Northwest Territories Canada. I am a multi-string guitar enthusiast (owning an 8 string (1981) and a 17 string (1985) both built by the Canadian luthier Sergei deJonge@ http://dejongeguitars.com I have a BFA in classical guitar performance from York University, Toronto (1989). I've participated with the University of Toronto Guitar Orchestra (1985) under the direction of Leo Brower. My interest in the multi-string guitar was first sparked when I heard the Bach Lute Suites recordings of Narciso Yepes. Since then I have had the honor of meeting Narciso Yepes at the home of Eli Kassner (Toronto) in 1986. I was most fortunate to have a very personal discussion with the Maestro about his family, music, astronomy, recording and of course the multi-string guitar concept. He saw and played my 17 string during that meeting. A particular goal with the multi-string guitar is to focus my technique, tuning and fingering decisions on maximizing the incredible timbre this kind of instrument has to offer. I'm happy to be part of the First Ten String Guitar Society as a way of celebrating the instrument's development along with those who enjoy playing and listening to this unique kind of guitar.
